Lab tool
A domestic pressure cooker can substitute for a laboratory autoclave in small-scale or hobby tissue culture setups. Reaches approximately 121°C at 15 psi, which is sufficient to sterilize small media batches and glass culture jars. Not validated for pharmaceutical use. Use a rack to elevate vessels above the water level, lock the lid properly, and maintain full pressure for at least 20 minutes for media sterilization. Allow pressure to release naturally before opening.
Consumer-grade pressure cookers are not validated laboratory autoclaves. Use only a cooker in good repair with a functioning, unobstructed pressure release valve. Never exceed the manufacturer's maximum fill volume. Do not seal completely — leave the vent weight in place to allow steam regulation. Allow pressure to fully release naturally before opening. Do not use for sterilizing infectious or biological waste.
