Used for surface sterilization of plant explants before introduction to culture. Typical protocol: dilute to 10–20% commercial bleach (1–2.6% active NaOCl) and treat for 10–20 minutes with gentle agitation, then rinse three times with sterile water. Use lower concentration and shorter exposure for soft tissues; higher concentration and longer time for hard seeds and woody stems. Add 1–2 drops of Tween-20 per 100 mL to improve wetting on hydrophobic surfaces.
Corrosive at high concentrations. Avoid inhaling fumes — work in a ventilated area when diluting concentrated bleach. Do not mix with ammonia, alcohols, or other cleaning agents; mixing generates toxic chlorine or chloramine gases. Wear nitrile gloves and eye protection. Rinse skin contact immediately with water.
